Gimme Some Sugar!

You absolutely cannot cut sugar totally out of your diet! Have you ever tried? Doesn’t it seem like the harder you try, the more you crave it? Not only is it hard to cut out, it’s also important that you don’t because your body needs sugar for energy.

The place where sugar gets a bad reputation is because food companies have a nasty habit of packing it into EVERYTHING! The sugar masks the fact that their product would otherwise taste like crap and helps to create a society hooked on their food.

The thing to remember about sugar is try to get it naturally whenever possible, eg. fruit, honey, maple syrup. These forms of sugar have less calories and also come with other health benefits like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

That is why I used maple syrup to create the sweetened apple crisp muffins, rather than adding 1/2 cup of sugar. You probably could achieve the same effect by substituting it BUT you would miss out on all kinds of nutritional bonuses. Maple syrup is not only yummy, but it’s also a great source of manganese and zinc. The manganese helps build enzymes while the zinc helps to prevent damage caused by cholesterol.
